Caulking mallets. JAPANESE.

I am adding these carpenters mallets to the caulking mallet listing. They weight 1 1/2 kilos are Japanese and made of hard wood. I have been experimenting with caulking with cotton and with that weight they are really good. I shall continue, of course, with the Traditional Caulking Mallet but these at £35 plus vat are very good value. So now you have a second choice. Price £35 plus vat

Caulking Mallets

Listed below are three. Mainly they were turned in Lignum Vitae which was no problem to obtain when we as a nation had an empire. Today it is a "farmed" wood in that only limbs of the tree are harvested instead of the whole tree. Sensible conservation when you think about it. However there is a price to pay. Lignum is sold by Kilo weight not Cube and is now expensive. The timber we use today is Lignum Vitae. Remember these mallets were made by the shipwrights themselves and there are many designs.

The traditional mallet had a head about 14 or 15 inches from side to side. The reason for this was that years ago with no cranes or marina lifts if caulking was done it was done whilst hauling over the vessel on her side to clean all the old weed off first. You needed a mallet with a long reach for the garboards etc as sometimes there was so little room to work.

Victory Mallet - to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar

Limited Edition only

victory mallet

The Victory Mallet is a copy of the mallets that would have been carried on HMS Victory prior to the Battle of Trafalgar. It is a mallet that weighs 2 1/4 kilos so enabling oakum to be driven into the large seams that existed on vessels of the Admiralty in that era. The head is turned in lignum vitae. The metal rings are AB2 nickel bronze so don't rust. The compression bolts are silicon bronze. Darts cut in the head as traditional to take the sting out of the handle, and handle made of selected ash.

Small Caulking Mallet (for cotton)

I have been asked to make a smaller mallet for caulking cotton. You do not always need a full length Standard mallet and this chap is 8 inches across the head. It's a lovely mallet, nice balance etc and has around three sixteenths protruding beyond the metal bands, which are now made in AB-2 nickel bronze, ready to burr over. The stale or handle is ash and the head we make in Lignum Vitae.
