Caulking Irons
Forged in Nickel Bronze (AB 2) and polished. We used to make our caulking irons in Tool Steel (EN 8). However, always looking for a way to better our existing irons, we decided, after much testing to use AB 2.
Some of the advantages are as follows:
Same tensile strength as tool steel (EN 8)
- The tools don't rust.
- No need to dip in linseed oil to pick up the odd whispy bits of oakum
- Very comfortable to use
- A joy to behold
- If you cast your mind to automotive tools they evolved through companies like Snap-On Tools and Proto to the high finish which made them such a pleasure for mechanics' to use. So why not the shipwright!
Dumb Iron This is used to open up a seam on a very close planked
boat to allow a little Cotton in, working just ahead of caulking it
opens up the seam. Extreme care must be taken as heavy hands can do
damage.
